Boris Johnson admitted on Wednesday that there was not enough coronavirus testing capacity - and parents are amongst those bearing the brunt.
For many, now was the time when their children were due to return to school after a prolonged period at home.
But a lack of Covid tests has meant that children with symptoms - or those whose classmates have symptoms - have been sent away from school.
Parents in Birmingham and Southend explained how the “nightmare” scenario had meant hours spent online or on the phone, then long waits before getting tests and results.
They also complained about the knock-on effect for the schools and their work.
