Wonderful Life singer Colin Vearncombe dies, aged 53

Colin Vearncombe, who performed under the name Black, has died aged 53. 

The Liverpool-born singer-songwriter was badly injured in a car accident near Cork, Ireland, on January 10, and placed in a medically-induced coma. 

Two days ago, an update to his Facebook page revealed that his condition had "seriously deteriorated." This afternoon, his status was updated to announce his death, with the simple message "Colin Vearncombe. 26/5/1962-26/1/2016. You'll never walk alone". According to his publicist, he died surrounded by friends and family.

Vearncombe, who was born in 1962, released his first single, Human Features, under the name Black, in 1981. Although he released 15 albums over his lifetime, he is best known for his 1987 song Wonderful Life, which was released twice as a single and became  a top ten hit in Switzerland, Germany, the UK, France, Austria, the Netherlands and Italy.

In recent years he also published poetry, and staged exhibitions of his paintings in Ireland, where he lived for more than 10 years. 

Black was to become a grandfather on St Patrick's Day, when his eldest son's child is due.
