Noel Gallagher beat Britpop arch-rivals Blur to win best album at this year’s Q Awards.

Ed Sheeran, James Bay and Duran Duran also received awards at the ceremony, held in association with Absolute Radio at the Gosvenor House Hotel, London.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin presented Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds with the award for their album Chasing Yesterday.

The band was formed by the former Oasis frontman in 2011 following Oasis’s split in 2009.

Blur, whose feud with Oasis famously dominated media headlines in the Nineties, had been nominated for their album The Magic Whip.

Ed Sheeran was named best male solo artist, only a week after his song Thinking Out Loud became the first song to be streamed half a billion times. The 24-year-old singer beat tough competition in the form of Sam Smith, Kanye West and Taylor Swift.

Florence and The Machine took home best video for Ship To Wreck. The band had been nominated for three Q awards. Early this week, it was announced that Florence’s album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful had been nominated for the Mercury Prize.

Duran Duran were named Q Icon while Queen received an award for best classic single. Bohemia Rhapsody received the gong as its 40th anniversary approaches. It was originally released on October 31 1975.

Matt Mason, senior editor of Q magazine, said: “It’s an honour to celebrate the careers of so many artists that have genuinely shaped modern music. With very different ideas and innovations, Gary Numan, Tony Iommi, queen, New Order, Duran Duran, Soul II, Mark Ronson and Noel Gallagher have all achieved the same result: radically redefining the musical and cultural landscape.”
