Pumpkins are a member of the squash family (Curcubita). First cultivated across the Atlantic, they were brought to us by intrepid explorers.

Now, they’ve become synonymous with autumn and are grown all over the UK. Helpfully, we’ve scouted out the best places across the UK to pick your very own pumpkins, just in time for Halloween...

Farmer Copley’s in West Yorkshire promises to present the UK’s largest pumpkin festival, from 21 October - 19 November. There will be more than 120,000 pumpkins both ‘warty’ and smooth, in a rainbow of red, green, white, blue, black, yellow, mixed and, of course, orange.

Numbers have been heavily reduced to adhere to government guidelines on social distancing and there will be a  one way system in place and a separate exit system. Wheelbarrows will be available for a £10 returnable deposit and you can find pumpkin prices on the website.

The Spookley Pumpkin Festival is coming to Apley Farm Shop on 10-31 October. For £3 entry you can pick from thousands of home-grown pumpkins, carve the spookiest of shapes and sample seasonal pumpkin dishes. And don't forget to buy your very own copy of the book ‘Spookley the Square Pumpkin’ and soft Spookley toy available in the Food Hall. Open 9:30 am until 4pm. Booked tickets are essential.

Until Sunday 1 November, The Lost Gardens of Heligan will host the annual Heligan Harvest. Families are invited to jump into the heart of the season, while resident shire horse, Courage, puts on a display. The Heligan Kitchen will be cooking up a storm of harvest-inspired lunches full of seasonal produce and Lobbs Farm Shop will be hosting pumpkin picking sessions

This year, it falls on 24-31st October. The much-loved pumpkin menu is back, too. Booked time slots are essential this year, no tickets will be available on the door.
