Spring is here and it's time to grab a bargain

It’s a good week for enticing wine offers, so whether you want a bottle double-quick to match today’s lunch or you’re already stocking up for Easter, here are some of the best buys.

Steak lovers should head for Co-op, where the ripe and juicy, black-cherryish Las Moras Barrel Select Malbec 2017, Argentina, is keenly priced – down from £8.25 to £6.25 until April 23.

If a Rhône-style blend is more your thing, Majestic has a noteworthy offer on the blackberryish Lachez-Vous Grenache-Syrah 2017, Vin de France, down from £10.99 to £8.99 in a mixed six now right through to late May.

And Waitrose’s Puklavec & Friends Cabernet-Merlot 2016 from Macedonia, all cassis and redcurrants, is £6.49 (down from £8.79) until April 9.

Refreshing dry whites on offer include the crisp and light (only 11.5%) Finest Côtes de Gascogne 2017, France (Tesco, £6.50 down to £5.50 until tomorrow – so hurry), while Morrisons is serving up its own lemon-limey, slightly creamy The Best Soave Classico 2017, Italy at £6 (usual price £6.50) until April 2.

Celebration coming up? The renowned and delicious Champagne Taittinger NV, France, is just £28, down from usual £39, at Asda until April 24 – if stocks last that long.

More affordable champagne in the form of the simpler but lively and appealing Louis Vertay Brut NV, France, is reduced from £20 to just £15 at M&S until April 1.

Finally, check out the 20 per cent off French wine sale currently on at greatwesternwine.co.uk. There are some famous names there and I especially like its new, youthful picpoul, below.

Did someone say spring?

Try these...

Reserve Roquemoliere Picpoul de Pinet 2018
Languedoc, France

(12.5%, Great Western Wine, £9.95 down to £7.96 until April 11)

Sings out with grapefruit and tangerine, a fresh and vibrant white, with mineral notes and zingy acidity but not sour. One for salads and seafood, especially scallops.

Domaine de la Curniere Vacqueyras 2016
Rhone, France

(14.5%, M&S, £13.50 down to £8.99 until April 1)

Generously slashed in price right now, this is a robust, strong but smooth Rhone blend, made from old vine fruit and with no oak, to let the redcurrant, plum and hint of spiced toffee shine through. Decant for roast lamb.

Taste the Difference Barossa Basket Press Cabernet-Merlot 2017,
South Australia

(14.5%, Sainsbury’s, £11 down to £9 until April 9)

Another big red, wrought in the hot Barossa Valley from two thirds cabernet sauvignon with merlot and a little cabernet franc. Bordeaux-style with a suntan, full-bodied and sweetly ripe with a long cassis finish.
