International Beer Day falls on Friday 4 August, but you don’t have to wait until then to enjoy a traditionally fermented weissbier or two.

These light German brews, which lend themselves perfectly to alfresco drinking in hot weather, are now widely available in the UK, and are becoming increasingly trendy. We’ll leave the dirndl and lederhosen up to you, though.

1)      Weihenstephan Hefe Weissbier, 5.4%; £2.69 per 500ml

This clove-scented, golden blonde beer from Freising near Munich impresses aficionados with its smooth, full-bodied yeastiness and just-discernible hints of refreshing lemon. The brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill is now centuries old, and produces a fine foamy head. While excellent paired with fish and seafood, it can also be enjoyed with Bavarian veal sausages and spicy cheeses.

2) Franziskaner Hefe Weissbier, 5%; £1.80 per 500ml

This copper-coloured, mellow brew has quite a history, with origins dating back to the oldest privately owned brewery in Munich, founded in 1363. It’s naturally cloudy and gently carbonated with a lush foam, and subtle notes of banana can be detected as well as citrussy flavours. For those craving the original, fresh, wheat beer taste, this is a classic just waiting to be rediscovered.

3) Erdinger Weissbier, 5.3%; £2.49 per 500 ml

The Erdinger Weissbräu is one of Germany’s largest private breweries. In strict accordance with the 500-year-old Bavarian purity laws, or ‘reinheitsgebot’, the beer is still bottle-fermented using only water, barley, hops and yeast. It takes around three to four weeks to mature and is ever so slightly malty and sweet, as well as possessing a distinctive herbaceous note evoking freshly-cut grass.
