After a particularly soggy start to Spring in most parts of the UK, many people may be dreaming of owning a holiday home in sunnier climes.

Most popular holiday cottage destinations

A Place in the Sun, the website for the Channel 4 show of the same name, has unveiled the top 10 places to buy a home abroad this year. Its rankings are determined by traffic on the site and the searches that are made throughout the thousands of property listings featured.

Spain is the top holiday home location for British holiday home buyers, according to A Place in the Sun, popular for its affordability, lifestyle and climate. The top locations in Spain include:

  • Torrevieja
  • Villamartin
  • Camposol

Which are all in the Costa Blanca, although Lanzarote is the fastest rising location in terms of popularity this year, often favoured as a winter sun destination.

France takes second place on the list of most popular destinations to buy abroad in 2018, with its proximity to the UK, good food and a choice of beach, country and ski resorts appealing to British holidaymakers. Favoured locations include the Dordogne, with its pretty villages and cuisine, along with Brittany, just a short distance across the Channel.

Portugal is the third most popular overseas destination for Brits to purchase holiday homes abroad, with Albufeira, Lagos and Vilamoura all among the most in demand resorts. According to A Place in the Sun, the capital Lisbon is particularly popular at the moment, with Madonna having recently purchased a property in nearby Sintra.

George Clooney, Helen Mirren and Sting are among many celebrities who own homes in Italy, which holds huge appeal for holiday home owners thanks to its numerous beaches, beautiful cities and delicious food.

USA: Florida

Florida is the fifth most popular destination for those looking to buy a holiday property overseas. Flight times may be longer, but warm weather throughout the year combined with numerous tourist attractions, theme parks and beaches mean it is often a particular hit with families.

If you’re searching for a holiday location that’s not too far away but has plenty of sun pretty much all year round, look no further than Cyprus. English is widely spoken throughout the island and property is affordable. Popular locations currently include the harbour town of Paphos, a UNESCO heritage site.

Despite the Greek financial crisis, Greece’s numerous islands with beautiful beaches, crystal clear seas and picturesque villages continue to tempt UK buyers looking to get away from it all. Popular island holiday home destinations include Rhodes, Corfu and Crete.

Malta has reached its highest position ever on the list of popular holiday home destinations, with UK buyers drawn there due to its Mediterranean climate and historic towns and villages. The capital Valetta is European City of Culture for 2018.

Plan your purchase carefully

If you’re considering buying a holiday home in any overseas location this year, remember that getting the best exchange rate possible could add a significant amount to your budget.  For example, if you found a rate that was 3% better than an alternative rate, this would make a £3,000 difference on a £100,000 transaction. Foreign exchange specialists typically offer better exchange rates and can provide you with expert market guidance on how to protect yourself from negative rate movements.
