Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are to star in a new big budget science fiction film, titled Passengers.
The project has been in the works for several years, but finally got the go-ahead from Sony yesterday.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pratt, whose career has been boosted by starring roles in Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, will be paid $12 million for the film, while Lawrence, who is now considered a major Hollywood star and box office draw, will vastly out-earn her male co-star, with a fee of $20 million, as well as a 30 per cent share of the film's profits once it breaks even.
Last year, Sony faced criticism after data uncovered by hackers revealed that Lawrence and her female co-star Amy Adams were paid less than their male counterparts for the film American Hustle.
Passengers will be directed by The Imitation Game's Morten Tyldum, with a script by the Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts.
The film will tell the story of a man (Pratt) on a long-haul space flight to a new colony, who awakes from an induced sleep 90 years too early.
Facing the prospect of living out his life alone on the ship, surrounded by sleeping passengers, he eventually decides to wake another, female passenger (Lawrence) – knowing that by doing so, he is condemning her to a similarly limited life.
Pratt can currently been seen playing a velociraptor trainer in dinosaur blockbuster Jurassic World, while Lawrence will next appear in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, released this November.
