Katherine Waterston to star in Harry Potter spin-off
The British-born actress will play Porpentina, or Tina, a witch based in New York City
Following the announcement earlier this month that Eddie Redmayne would be taking on the role of Newt Scamander in the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them, Warner Bros has revealed the name of his first co-star.
Katherine Waterston, a London-born American actress, will play Porpentina, the New York-based witch who will become Newt's wife. Waterston, 35, was last seen as Joaquin Phoenix's elusive ex-girlfriend Shasta in Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice, and will appear opposite Michael Fassbender's Steve Jobs in Danny Boyle's biopic of the Apple supremo.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set in around 1920, and is based on the imaginary Hogwarts textbook of the same name, written by Newt Scamander. Scamander is a "magizoologist", who travels the world studying magical creatures.
The film, the first in a trilogy, is to be directed by David Yates, who was behind the last four Harry Potter films. JK Rowling will make her screenwriting debut with the film, after admitting that she found it too hard to hand over the characters to another writer.
"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the ‘Harry Potter’ series," said Rowling, "but an extension of the wizarding world."
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set for release on November 18 2016
