Watch: Benedict Cumberbatch meets Tilda Swinton in mesmerising first Doctor Strange trailer
The first trailer for Marvel's Doctor Strange has been released and it looks set to be the most mythical film from the franchise yet.
Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Stephen Strange, a masterful surgeon who must regain his talents after a debilitating car crash, and this dark and moody trailer follows Strange in his transition between the two - as well as what happens afterwards.
Strange travels to remote parts of the world to learn how to recoup his powers through alternative teaching, whereupon he finds himself a student of The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), a practiced magician and guru who encourages Strange to embrace other worlds and planes of discovery.
Although Cumberbatch's Strange is initially sceptical, as the trailer shows, he is soon won over, demanding that The Ancient One teach him.
Director Scott Derrickson's film is the second installment from the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sandwiched between the soon-to-be-released Captain America: Civil War and 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.
The trailer suggests the film owes a lot in tone and styling to Christopher Nolan's mind-bending Inception, in which Leonardo DiCaprio plays an espionage agent who must infiltrate another's mind for a job.
The Doctor Strange trailer features rich mystical treatment of far-flung martial arts schools, and special effects that pay homage to fight scenes from The Matrix trilogy.
Doctor Strange will be released on November 4, 2016.
