While film buffs and critics look to the Cannes Film Festival to spot breakout dramatic performances and next year’s Oscar contenders, beauty mavens are more focused on the world’s most glamorous red carpets. With the help of professional make-up teams, the A-listers are sure to bring their beauty A games.

But for non-celebrities, fitting in among those flawless faces isn’t as difficult as it sounds. With the right products and a little preparation, it’s easy to create your own gorgeous red-carpet look. To show us how it’s done, we asked professional make-up artist Liz Pugh to sit down with Telegraph beauty editor Katy Young. Together they chose their line-up of products from Boots’ premium beauty brands – including Smashbox, Benefit, YSL, Soap and Glory, Clinique, Estée Lauder, Lancôme and Clarins.

“For the red carpet, the look has to be flawless,” Pugh says. “The aim is to enhance natural beauty because you never want to feel like you’re out of your comfort zone.”

For Young, the most impressive part of the look was its staying power. “I’m always terrified of wearing heavy make-up when I go out for a long night because of how it fades and smudges,” she said. “But Liz made me realise that choosing the right products and investing a few extra minutes in the application really does make all the difference. After my makeover, my look lasted well into the night and it faded beautifully, too.”
