There’s no better time to rock a statement-making lip than at the Cannes Film Festival. For this red-carpet beauty look, professional make-up artist Liz Pugh trialled a classic bright red lip on Telegraph beauty editor Katy Young.

“On the red carpet it’s really important to work with what you’re wearing,” Pugh says. “So I’d generally decide on a lip colour according to the dress. But a bold lip really is a great way to add drama to your look.”

She started by applying a bit of Clinique Airbrush Concealer. “I use it to get rid of any natural pigment in the lips because I want the true colour to be from the lipstick.” Next she used the Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Lip Pencil to both line and fill in the lips.

Then she used the No7 Retractable Lip Brush to apply the Clinique Pop Lip Colour and Primer in the bold Cherry Pop shade. “It’s really long-lasting,” Pugh says. “This way you know you’ve got a really low-maintenance lip but you’ve got a really high-maintenance look.”

The resulting look is one Young would recommend to anyone looking to add a bit of glamour. “Don’t be scared of a red lip – it really does suit everyone,” she says. “It’s all about confidence.”
