Director Gaspar Noé has said that his pornographic love story, which features graphic sexual content, should be available to viewers as young as 12.
Speaking at a Cannes press conference, Noé described the film as a “joyful” account of love through sex. The Argentian director believes that the film will be censored to younger audiences. “I think it’ll be banned for those under 16,” said Noé. “If I was part of the committee I would set the age limit at 16 or 12 maybe.”
Hundreds queued to see the 3D spectacle, which premiered at midnight on Wednesday. Although the film received mixed reviews with The Telegraph’s Robbie Collin describing it as “all look, no touch”, it was undeniably the talking point of this year’s programme.

“I was making a film about love. It wasn’t about Swiss banks or Scientology. Why not show what that means?” said Noé in defense of the film’s explicit content.
The film’s cast were equally comfortable with shooting particularly graphic scenes in close proximity, although some took a while to warm up.
“I was in the bathroom thinking I should run to the airport and go back to the States”, said the film’s star Karl Glusman when recalling a sequence involving his genitals.
His co-star Klara Kristin appeared more relaxed, saying: “When I was young I had a lot of complexes showing my body. Then it was like, why? We’re all human. It’s natural.”
