Are you ready for the summer shoe season? From the new sandal trends, to the fresh designer labels to know, consider this your ultimate guide to consult before shopping. Pedicures at the ready...

1. The new minimalism

The chunky plastic pool slide has dominated for several summers now as the sandal of choice, but this year the trend-ometer is about to tip the other way, in favour of barely there, almost naked, footwear. Los Angeles-based designer Emme Parsons only founded her eponymous label in 2017, but her understated shoes are about to soar to the top of every fashion editor’s wishlist. Get in there first when she launches in the UK on this month.

2. The fab four

Not one, but four cult ready-to-wear designers are all branching out to launch shoe collections, just in time for spring...

Brock Collection

Designed in collaboration with Tabitha Simmons, the debut shoes from Los Angeles based husband and wife Laura and Kris Brock echo the repurposed vintage floral jacquards in their ready-to-wear line.

Inspired by the 1976 film Fox Trot, every shoe is boldly coloured, yet totally comfortable from Sarah Staudinger, who's ready-to-wear and bag designs are already Instagram ‘like’ bait.

Available now, from £170,

Simon Miller

Colour blocking has led the way for 10 years at Simon Miller, but the brand is only now extending its aesthetic into shoes. There are literal platform blocks, for the brave, or classic flat slides for the rest of us.

From £350,

Les Petits Joueurs

The Florence-based handbag brand brings its signature quirk to jewelled mules and sandals. Consider these your new ‘special occasion’ shoes.

3. An update for Meghan

The Duchess of Sussex’s favourite Aquazzura Deneuve heels will be given a high summer makeover, thanks to a new collaboration between creative director Edgardo Osorio and womenswear designer Racil Chalhoub. They’re calling it ‘Dolce Vita dressing for the Instagram era’, which I love.

4. The new DIY shoe

It is quite amazing to see all of the components of a shoe laid out in front of you. From next week, Fendi is inviting us all to rebuild their innovative Colibrì shoes with seven toe choices, three styles of ribbon and two heel heights in various finishes. Who wouldn’t want to play shoe designer?

Made-to-order service from £490 a pair, at all UK Fendi stores.

5. Valentino takes (Birken)stock

The house of Valentino has announced an unlikely new collaborator; Birkenstock. Their couture footbed sandals will arrive in June, but actress Frances McDormand got to test the prototypes on stage at the Oscars in February. Birkenstocks, of all kinds, are set to have another string summer - perhaps making them the only viable rival for the new barely-there sandals. Pick your side.
