How the Middleton family has nailed festive dressing this year

Carole Middleton, Pippa Matthews, the Duchess of Cambridge and Princess Charlotte have all led the way

It's a Christmastime like no other, with most opportunities to wear a sequin and a sparkle dashed, or destined to take place over Zoom this year.

But there are still plenty of reasons to get dressed with festive spirit, as the Middleton family has proven in the last few weeks.

The Duchess of Cambridge, her mother Carole Middleton, her sister Pippa Matthews and daughter Princess Charlotte have all perhaps unwittingly offered up perfect outfit solutions for the unique events we find ourselves in this year.

These four outfit solutions might get anyone, of any generation, through the realities of these holidays in style, as well as Christmas cheer.

1. The party-at-home attire

Carole Middleton

Carole Middleton has declared and shared her party outfit of choice for 2020; a relaxed, soft sparkly knitted pair of trousers, teamed with a black velvet top, all bought on the high street at Whistles. Her bets were well-hedged with this one - rather than banking it all on a sequinned dress, which may never have made it to the disco it deserved, here we have a more understated but no less sparkly alternative.

In buying separates, Carole can wear these pieces again and again, and after dinner at home on the 25th she will be warm and comfortable as she throws her feet up onto the sofa with a glass of red and lets Michael Middleton do the washing up (it's Christmas, let's imagine).

2. The not-too-naff novelty knit

Staring down the lens of yet another festive Zoom quiz? Take a leaf from Pippa Matthews's book and say yes to the silly sweater - the only part of your outfit that might be visible on screen. Matthews's jumper is made by Manchester-based ANS Knitwear, costs £15.99, and features an LED light circuit which will undoubtedly thrill the children. For anyone in need of a last-ditch attempt to keep the spirits up for young, or old, this could be a viable solution.

3. The smartly dressed evening out

For those in Tiers One, Two, or Three this Christmas, a family evening at a restaurant might still be on the cards. The Cambridge clan made it to the panto earlier in December, an outing which warranted a strong sartorial effort. Note Princess Charlotte in a lightly festive tartan dress with wool tights, and Prince Louis in a toy soldier jacket as the stars of this show.

4. The festive coat

If door-step deliveries of presents are top of your agenda for the next few days, take a moment to think about your choice of coat. The Duchess of Cambridge, at a recent outdoor engagement, paired a bright red long coat with a coordinating tartan skirt and scarf by Emilia Wickstead, in an outfit Mrs Claus would be proud of. If it's all they'll see of you this festive season, it at least sends a bright, visual message of health and happiness - and let's them know that you were not entirely lost to grey loungewear this year.
