We are always on the look out for new faces to shape up the red carpet, and bring a fresh, daring approach to the premiere dressing game. Star Trek Beyond's Sofia Boutella is one of a new wave of actresses, including Soko, Bel Powley, Daisy Ridley and Alicia Vikander, who are turning their backs on traditional codes, and bringing a cooler, more honest approach to their red carpet wardrobes.

The Algeria-born, Paris-raised 34-year-old actress may still be a relatively unknown, but she is bound to be a break out star in Hollywood with forthcoming roles in The Mummy with Tom Cruise and The Coldest City with Charlize Theron and James McAvoy. She has prepared for the many large-scale press tours that lie ahead of her by working with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's stylist Cher Coulter to carve out a look which is making the fashion crowd take notice.

This is a girl who clearly loves fashion, so much so that she started making her own jewellery over 10 years ago when she was 22- although she hasn't turned it into a commercial venture. "I make body chains that come from the neck, cross in the middle of your chest, then go around your waist," Boutella has previously said of her designs. "I mix them with feathers for a gypsy, bohemian style."

To promote Star Trek Beyond at the end of last month, Boutella made unusual - but spot-on - choices, wearing a gothic black sheer lace Alberta Ferretti gown with stacked Messika jewellery to the London premiere and a short white lace Elie Saab dress to Comic-Con. "She's adventurous and brave," says Coulter, her British stylist, of her approach to fashion. "I think she'll surprise us with her choices. She is also individual; she won't be one to be obvious. She's a little bit of a break from the norm."

As a jewellery obsessive, Boutella has one clear request when it comes to her styling - that she had plenty of rings and bracelets to liven up her look. "She always wants to make it interesting with the jewellery," adds Coulter. "Sofia did say she likes lots of rings, and bracelets and stacking jewellery. She's fun because she wants to go there and she cares about what she's wearing."

"I like working with the new girls," Coulter says of working with actresses at the beginning of their careers to develop their red carpet look from scratch. "It's not easier, because you have to create relationships with designers so it's from the bottom up. With the new girls you are more invested in them and you help develop their look. What was interesting and challenging at the same time with Sofia was I did the whole first fitting over Skype."

"You want to be in the room with a new client, which is tough, but you are already seeing it on a screen so you have that distance from it," Coulter says about their six-hour Skype fitting. "Because sometimes you can be like 'it looked great in the flesh' but it's really important what it looks like on camera, so that was useful."

On the red carpet she might favour dramatic, even rebellious gowns, a quick scroll through Instagram makes it apparent that when she's not on the red carpet she keeps it more casual. Boutella favours basic grey t shirts, distressed denim, chunky boots and stacked rings.

Whether you're likely to watch her upcoming action films or not, you will certainly be seeing a lot of Sofia Boutella in every fashion magazine come 2017.
