Céline Dion is launching a fashion label, so what can we expect?

The singer Céline Dion is launching a fashion brand this autumn. She couldn’t call it Céline, alas, as that one’s already taken, but Dion is planning to make her first mark on the industry with handbags, which will launch with American retailer Nordstrom in August.

The Céline Dion Collection’s first drop is said to be comprised of 50 affordable styles, covering handbags, luggage and other small accessories, with prices varying between $58 and $298. A single image has been released offering a preview of one design - a black, top-handle bag with contrasting top-stitching, and a sculpted gold lock.

The move comes at the end of the year that Dion found her fashion footing, hiring a new stylist, Law Roach, who she says helped her enjoy a new sense of personal style. Last January her husband of 22 years, René Angélil, passed away after suffering from cancer and, just two days later she lost her brother to the same disease.

In June, Dion began to enjoy experimenting with new designers and established names and, when Roach took her to Paris Couture Week in July for the first time, the pop icon was seen cheering on the front row at the Giambattista Valli show.

“I’m a firm believer that things happen when they are supposed to and I think that us partnering up when we did and having that amazing time was meant to be,” Roach told The Telegraph. “She was dealing with, and I’m sure she is still dealing with, the death of her husband and her brother. She was going through a lot of tragedy and, these are her words, the dresses and the bags and these lighter moments have helped her with her recovery.”

Of Dion’s taste and aesthetic, Roach says that she’s open to trying on anything to see what suits her. “I can literally bring Céline any silhouette, any colour and she will want to see it on,” he says. “Some things just don’t work, that’s the nature of fashion, but she’s never afraid to find out.”

Having sold over 240 million records in a career spanning more than 30 years, Dion’s change of tac in fashion will leave critics keen to dismiss this as ‘just another celebrity clothing line’. But Roach has insisted that Dion’s interest in fashion is not a new-found one - she’s only just discovering how best to showcase it.

“She’s always been this girl though, the world just hadn’t noticed yet,” Roach told us. “People knew her as the voice and this legendary pop icon, but she’s letting you see another side to her now.”
