To mark the milestone of 140 years, designers took inspiration from Art Nouveau and abstract graphics to create a special anniversary print, both modern and true to Liberty’s brand
An exclusive print has been designed for Liberty’s 140th birthday. Using the store’s iconic archive, the heads of design briefed their teams to come up with their own take on a print based on an idea of celebration.
The mix of classic swirls with modern firework bursts ensures the print is modern but true to the Liberty brand
This collaborative effort took three weeks from research to production of the final print, with two key elements bringing it to life – the Art Nouveau swirls from the very early archive prints of the 1900s, and the more abstract, graphic detail from the 2000 Dahlia print representative of an exploding firework.
The combination of these conveys celebration. The mix of the classic swirls with the modern firework bursts ensures the print is modern but true to the Liberty brand.
It is called Mayflower, reflecting the May birthday and also paying homage to the ship that can be seen atop the store in the famous Liberty weathervane. It is a model of the Mayflower, which took 102 English pilgrims across the Atlantic to New England in 1620.
