As with all WorldTour races, each of the 19 teams that make up the top-flight of professional cycling received an invite and in the case of the Tour de France, all teams were contracted to race.

In addition to the WorldTour teams, race organisers ASO handed wildcard spots to Pro-Continental teams Arkéa-Samsic, B&B Hotels-Vital Concept p/b KTM and Total Direct Énergie.

Of the 22 teams that started the 107th edition of the Tour, five — Ag2r-La Mondiale, Arkéa-Samsic, Cofidis Solutions Crédits, Groupama-FDJ and Total Direct Énergie — were French.

Just 146 of the 176 riders that set out from Nice rolled over the line on the Champs-Élysées, but who was left standing and where did the others fall?

Following a chaotic opening day of racing in Nice where a number of riders crashed, Lotto-Soudal rider John Degenkolb become the first rider to depart after he completed the stage outside the time limit. The following morning it was announced that Degenkolb's team-mate Philippe Gilbert had also crashed and would not start stage two.

Rafael Valls was another casualty from an attritional opening day of racing, his departure leaving his Bahrain-McLaren team a man light. Anthony Perez, meanwhile, abandoned midway through stage three after the Cofidis Solutions Crédits rider crashed on a descent.

Stage eight, the first day of a Pyrenean double-header, saw four abandon — William Bonnet (Groupama-FDJ), Lilian Calmejane (Total Direct Énergie), Giacomo Nizzolo (NTT), Diego Rosa (Arkéa-Samsic) — while two further riders — Fabio Aru (UAE Team Emirates) and Steff Cras (Lotto-Soudal) — failed to finish the following day's race.

Domenico Pozzovivo (NTT) failed to start the stage following the first rest day, while Sam Bewley (Mitchelton-Scott) and Davide Formolo (UAE Team Emirates) both crashed during stage 10. Bewley abandoned immediately although Formolo made it to the finish line. However, the Italian was unable to continue the following day leaving team leader and a prospect for the overall Tadej Pogacar left with just five team-mates.

Ion Izagirre (Astana) abandoned after crashing during stage 11 which came shortly after Gregor Mühlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe) quit the race. Ilnur Zakarin (CCC) bailed midway through stage 12 having bruised his ribs during a crash the previous day.

It was an unlucky 13th stage for Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) and Romain Bardet (Ag2r-La Mondiale) who both crashed, forcing the Dutchman to quit. Bardet reached the finis line, but was unable to start the next day's stage after having suffered with concussion. There was more bad news for Ag2r-La Mondiale during stage 14 when Pierre Latour abandoned.

The next rider to fall foul of the Tour was Sergio Higuita (EF Pro Cycling) who broke a bone in his hand during a crash stage 15, forcing the Colombian to prematurely end his debut outing at the race.

David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) abandoned midway through stage 16, while fellow Frenchman Jérôme Cousin (Total Direct Énergie) completed the stage outside the time limit before he was eliminated. The following day Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) did not make the start line, while defending champion Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) also quit before the stage had started. Later in the day, Mikel Nieve (Mitchelton-Scott) abandoned a grand tour for the first time in his career before Jens Debusschere (B&B Hotels-Vital Concept) became the latest to fall foul of the time limits imposed on the riders.

Veteran sprinter André Greipel (Israel Start-up Nation) quit during stage 18, before the following day Jonathan Castroviejo (Ineos Grenadiers) and Michael Gogl (NTT) failed to start, while Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe) became to final rider to abandon after he was stung in the mouth by a bee or a wasp.
