The humble Lada has been the butt of many automotive jokes over the past 50 years or so, but they occupy a very special place in the hearts of some Russian petrolheads. Designed to be cheap and easy to fix, many of these basic, unrefined cars have survived far longer than they should have done.

Some have found their way into the hands of enthusiastic drift drivers. Drifting is a burgeoning motorsport that involves driving a car sideways at high speed. In the case of this video, drivers have congregated on a large expanse of tarmac near Moscow, and driven on a pre-set course laid out in cones that is intermittently hosed down to make it slippery.

It can be a particularly silly spectacle, but one attracting a growing number of fans around the world.
