Former F1 World Champion will drive a classic Mercedes Grand Prix car at the 74th Goodwood Members’ Meeting

Double Formula One World Champion Mika Häkkinen is the latest name to be added to the line-up for the Goodwood 74th Members’ Meeting, which runs from March 19-20.

Häkkinen, who was crowned champion in 1998 and ’99 while racing for McLaren-Mercedes, will take to the Goodwood Motor Circuit alongside fellow F1 legend Jochen Mass, with the two driving Silver Arrows Grand Prix cars from the Fifties.

The cars in question are the Mercedes W196 (an example of which was sold for $29.6 million at Goodwood’s Bonhams sale in 2013) and its “streamliner” counterpart, which was built for high-speed circuits such as Monza and Reims.

The W196 is most famous for taking Juan Manuel Fangio to back-to-back F1 titles in 1954 and ’55.

When they’re not in action on the track, the Silver Arrows will be on display on the stand of Swiss luxury watch maker, IWC Schaffhausen, which is the official Timing Partner of the event. IWC will also have a third Mercedes: a W35, similar to the car that carried Rudolf Caracciola to the European Championship title in 1935.

The Members’ Meeting was created by Goodwood owner Lord March to recreate the atmosphere and camaraderie of the original BARC Members’ Meetings, which were held at the Goodwood Motor Circuit from 1949-66.

An array of top racing drivers from past and present will battle it out on track but, unlike most race meetings, will score points for four “houses”, captained by former Super Touring ace Anthony Reid, Le Mans legend Emanuele Pirro, ex-F1 race and Le Mans 24 Hours winner Mass and ex-Formula 3000 race-winner and world-class sports car racer Nicolas Minassian.

The packed two-day programme for the 74th Members’ Meeting will feature 12 races for vehicles ranging from Edwardian leviathans to 1970s Grand Prix motorcycles.

As well as the on-track action, the event features a huge range of attractions for all the family, including an exclusive event on the Saturday evening and a wide variety of food and entertainment throughout.

A fairground, live music, and a series of games in which visitors can score additional points for their chosen “house” complete the carnival atmosphere.

Tickets for the 74th Members’ Meeting were initially available only to Goodwood Road Racing Club Members and people on the GRRC waiting list, but they can now be purchased by other motorsport fans, presenting a golden opportunity to attend one of the most exclusive events in the world.
