‘Baby’ AMG C-class will offer a more affordable alternative to full-fat AMG C63

Mercedes has revealed that it plans to launch a toned-down C43 version of its AMG C63 Coupé, intended to bring the high-performance Mercedes-AMG brand within reach of a broader spread of buyers.

The price of the new car has not yet been revealed, but is expected to be in the region of £50,000 – well below the £61,160 the AMG C63 starts at.

But while it might not be the “full-fat” AMG C-class, don’t think for a second that the C43 will be slow. True, it does away with its big brother’s twin-turbo V8 engine, but the C43 will still be powered by a 3.0-litre V6, also with two turbos, which will feature a cylinder coating developed for use in Formula One.

Power for the new model will come from a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6

Thanks to a modified control unit, higher boost pressure and a higher red-line, the new powerplant will develop 362bhp and 384lb ft of torque, enough to send the AMG C43 to 62mph in just 4.7 seconds, and on to an electronically restricted top speed of 155mph.

Also standard will be a nine-speed automatic gearbox which will feature a double de-clutch function on downshifts, and four-wheel drive with a bias toward the rear wheels.

The new C43 will also come with adaptive suspension as standard, allowing the driver to switch between different modes depending on whether they’re looking for a sporting or a comfortable ride quality.

Inside, the new C43 will feature aluminium trim and red stitching

Mercedes says that the C43 Coupé will be the first of a series of “43” models, all of which will be built around a similar drivetrain. That’s likely to mean a saloon and estate will join the range first, with C43’s engine also likely to make it into the upcoming SLC convertible.

The C43 is intended to rival Audi’s next S4, the model which has sat below the fire-breathing RS4 in that company’s model range for years.

Comparisons will also be drawn with the Jaguar XES and BMW 340i, though the C43 trumps both of those models for outright power and torque.

The new Mercedes-AMG C43 Coupé will be revealed in full at the Geneva motor show, with sales in the UK expected to commence shortly thereafter. Prices have yet to be announced, but expect them to
