Britain is pretty unimaginative when it comes to classic cars. Ask most people what their favourite is and they'll reply with one of about a dozen options – E-Type, Beetle, Morris Minor etc – and probably only remember a handful more. Our affection for certain models is arbitrary and often based on hype; there are many hundreds of thousands of gorgeous classic cars that everyone seems to have forgotten.

Take this Zagato masterpiece, for instance. The Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato Spyder dominated the most important races of its time, including the Mille Miglia in 1933, the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1931 and 1932 and of course the Targa Florio.
