The boss of Pret a Manger has said he sees a long-term shift to home working as the coffee and sandwich chain prepares for life with fewer people in city centres.
Pano Christou, Pret's chief executive, said the company needed to adapt itself to changing consumer patterns as workers shun the office for the comfort of their own homes.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he said: "I think there's no doubt that workers will come into the office less often than they had done beforehand, and I think from Pret's perspective very early on we said: 'This is not for us to decide.'
"Pret needs to adapt itself to the changes of customer patterns and that's where we've been very focused."
It comes a week after the chain axed 2,800 jobs, with 10 years of growth being wiped out by the pandemic.
Mr Christou added that two-fifths of Pret's business is outside central London, where a recovery in sales has been quicker than inside the capital.
"What we have seen over the last six months in particular is just an acceleration of customer behaviour changes, and lots of these ideas were plans kind of in flight a year or so ago," he said.
"Clearly with Covid we've had to focus on putting things into action much quicker than we initially planned to."
Pret has also launched an in-store subscription service for customers to pay for the coffee they order each month as part of a major shift in strategy.
The "YourPret Barista" service will allow customers to buy up to five drinks each day for a month on a £20 monthly subscription.
However, Mr Christou raised some eyebrows when he said the service would allow customers to "engage with a fantastic cup of coffee".
Rivals are also struggling to adapt to lower footfall in city centres. On Thursday, Costa said it would cut up to 1,650 jobs, adding that it does not know when trading might return to pre-crisis levels.
In July, Pret announced plans to close 30 of its shops.
