Check out our expert Southampton vs Manchester United tips as the Red Devils bid to extend their 100% away league record against hosts who have won their last three at home

In-form Southampton could break into the top four of the Premier League over the weekend, but they will have their work cut out against a Manchester United side who have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks.

Only Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have accumulated more top-flight points than Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side since the Premier League resumed in June. They will again be without the injured Danny Ings, but they have accumulated four points from the two games he has missed so far.

United are four points behind the Saints in the standings and the pressure had been mounting on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side following back-to-back defeats at the start of the month, but three successive wins have since followed, as the Red Devils look to have found a consistency that had previously been eluding them.

Southampton vs Manchester United predictions

The Saints have the second-best home record in the division this term and they’re expected to more than match an inconsistent United side who have a midweek European game in their legs. However the absence through injury of clinical leading goalscorer Danny Ings means they may have to settle for a point.

Unbeaten runs to be extended

Southampton have won five and drawn two of their last seven matches, with their last defeat coming at the hands of league leaders Tottenham more than two months ago. Since that loss at St Mary’s Stadium, the Saints have won all three of their subsequent home games without conceding a goal.

Hasenhuttl’s men average fewer shots conceded per home game than any other side in the Premier League this term (6) and it’s not even close, with Brighton next best on 7.5.

United’s form has not been as consistent, but they have recorded victories over Everton, West Brom and Istanbul Basaksehir since the last international break, while they are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League away games, winning eight of those fixtures, including each of the last seven.

That would imply that something has to give on the south coast this weekend, but perhaps not, as five of the last seven meetings between the two sides have ended in a draw, most recently the 2-2 stalemate they played out at Old Trafford back in July.

Tip: Draw @ 5/2 with bet365

Saints could pay the penalty

United may not have topped the Premier League itself for some time, but one area in which they can look down on all their rivals is in winning penalties.

Solskjaer’s side have been awarded a league-high 18 spot kicks since the start of last season, scoring 13 of those, including Bruno Fernandes’ winner against West Brom in their most recent league fixture. Only Brighton (13.8) average more fouls per 90 minutes (13.3) than Southampton in the Premier League this term.

Marcus Rashford also scored from the spot during United’s midweek Champions League success over Istanbul Basaksehir, so backing another United penalty to be converted on Sunday could prove shrewd.

Tip: Man United to score a penalty @ 4/1 with bet365

Fernandes to lead United's charge

If United are awarded a penalty on Sunday, then it is likely Portugal midfielder Fernandes will take it, as he has converted an impressive 12 of the 13 spot-kicks he has taken since arriving at the club in January.

The 26-year-old could have extended that record further had he not sportingly handed penalty duties to Rashford against Basaksehir, despite being on a hat-trick himself.

Indeed, Fernandes is not just a goalscoring threat from 12 yards, with the former Sporting Lisbon star having notched 21 times in his 35 appearances for the club, including six in eight Premier League games to date this term.

Fernandes is rarely rested, so it is likely he will be on from the start against Southampton and given he has scored five goals in his last three appearances for the club, it is difficult to see him not notching at St Mary's as well.

Tip: Bruno Fernandes to score any time @ 15/8 with bet365
