Improving Chelsea will be hoping to extend their winning run to four matches when they welcome struggling Sheffield United to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
The Blues have discovered greater consistency and defensive solidity in recent weeks and it is difficult to see that changing against a Blades side who have picked up just one point and scored three goals in their opening seven top-flight matches this season.
Chelsea vs Sheffield United predictions
Things have started to click for Chelsea during a seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions that includes three wins from their last three. Sheffield United could not be playing the Blues at a worse time. They are without a win in their first seven league games and we can’t see that changing at Stamford Bridge. Blues to continue for Blades
All the talk since Frank Lampard took over as Chelsea manager during the summer of 2019 has been regarding their suspect defence and that continued at the start of this season, with individual errors leading them to concede three goals at home against both West Bromwich Albion and Southampton.
However, the arrival of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and the experience of centre-back Thiago Silva appear to have tightened things up over recent weeks and the Blues have not conceded at all in their last five matches in all competitions.
That run includes games against Europa League champions Sevilla and Manchester United, so the Blues will feel they should have no problem keeping Sheffield United at bay on Saturday, particularly given no team have scored fewer goals in the Premier League this season than the Blades.
Chris Wilder’s side look a shadow of the team who took the division by storm last season, when they took four points off Chelsea and scored five goals in their two league meetings.
Scoring one seems a tough enough task for the South Yorkshire side this time round and it appears more likely that Chelsea will continue with their recent defensive resurgence.

Chelsea to frank form book
Chelsea’s run of clean sheets began with back-to-back goalless draws against Sevilla and Manchester United, as the side struggled to strike the right balance between defensive solidity and attacking flair.
However, the Blues have scored 10 goals without reply in their last three matches and have led at half-time in all of those games.
Indeed, in five of Chelsea’s six wins so far this season they have been ahead at the interval, while United have conceded first in six of their seven top-flight games to date this term, the only exception being when they took a surprise lead at Anfield against Liverpool last month.
In Chelsea’s two most recent victories over the Blades they also led by half-time, including when Lampard himself put them in front at Bramall Lane back in October 2006.

Werner finding his feet
It took Germany striker Timo Werner a few weeks to find his feet at Chelsea following his high-profile summer transfer from RB Leipzig, but there is no doubt he is up to speed now, with seven goals in his last seven appearances.
That run includes a brace during the 3-0 Champions League success over Rennes in midweek and what was notable about those goals was that they both came from the penalty spot.
It does now appear as though Werner has taken over spot-kick duties at Chelsea, as former penalty taker Jorginho was on the pitch for the full 90 minutes against Rennes.
Indeed, the Italy midfielder seems to have paid the price for his miss against Krasnodar last month, with Werner being a more than willing beneficiary.
That should enhance Werner’s chances of grabbing even more goals this season, including against the Blades, with the 24-year-old looking a more than likely candidate to score at any time.
