Olivier Rousteing on the Balmain x H&M fragrance

If we weren’t excited enough about the Balmain x H&M collaboration, we can reveal that there’s a fragrance in the collection too.

The £34.99 perfume blends tonka bean and jasmine with a warm base of white musk and wood. It’s likeable and easy-to-wear, much like the high street brand, and in a glamorous, high fashion casing – exactly what you’d expect from the Parisian fashion house.

Speaking to Forbes.com, Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing said, “When we agreed to collaborate with H&M, I wanted it to be the biggest, boldest collection yet. I wanted it to be more than just clothes, I wanted it to be a whole experience. That is why we created the hashtag #HMBalmaination, to symbolize this immersive, new Balmain and H&M world, but I wanted to go further. I love that there’s a fragrance to bring that world to life, something unique and one-of-a-kind just for the collaboration.”

And apparently Rousteing, who has very much become a celebrity in his own right, had complete creative freedom making the fragrance. “I wanted to create a fragrance that was both deep and enlightened, something that could be for both him or for her,” says Rousteing.

“I love the depth of the fragrance, especially the woody heart and the end-notes of musk and sandalwood. I love how the fragrance is so seductive, and mixes the traditional world with the contemporary and new, just like the collection. The bottle design is rich and strong, and is the pure essence of Balmain, which runs through everything in the collaboration."

He continues, “I believe that fashion should be for everyone. I have loved collaborating with H&M so much because it means I’ll get to see my clothes worn on the street. I believe that fashion is part of pop culture, and when you are pop you speak with the whole population. It’s been such an amazing experience to be able to share Balmain with the world, and it was so great that H&M wanted us to do this fragrance too, like a finishing touch to the collaboration.”

Sadly the fragrance doesn’t launch until December 3, almost a month after the clothing collection hits stores. As a teaser, each customer who makes a purchase at the launch will receive a sample vial of the Balmain x H&M fragrance. Sharpen those elbows, folks.
