It's often difficult to gauge just how full-on to go for Christmas parties, so it's often the case we just plump with an extra coat of mascara or a slick of red lipstick. But get noticed at the party – for all the right reasons. The celebrity make-up artist Ruby Hammer shares her five secrets to help you shine...

Get cheeky

A vibrant cheek is very modern and instantly lights up the face. Using a powder brush, add blush on the apples of your cheeks, sweeping up to the temples. I’ve used Rouge Blush Couture by Dior in shade 999, £34, which suits all  skin tones. Just remember to blend for an extra 30 seconds once you think you’re done. A bold blush looks great with  a matching lip  shade, but in a softer texture. Try Lip Veil in Impatiens by Chantecaille, £38.

Join the glitterati

Don’t be afraid to  try new textures: shimmer and pearl effects can work really well for women over 35, provided the product doesn’t have huge chunks of glitter in it. This is especially  the case on the  eyes, where a soft shimmer catches the light beautifully.  Try the 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in 617 Lucky Star by Dior, £48.50, which is a fantastic neutral palette. Pair with a deeper lip colour, such as the Color Sensational Matte Lipstick in Cruel Ruby, £6.99,  by Maybelline.

Be all aflutter

The easiest way to amp up the drama for a Christmas  do is to push the boundaries on your liner and mascara. The Gel Eye Liner in Obsidian by Hourglass, £16, is very long- lasting and adds impact to the eyes. For lashes with va-va-voom, try Diorshow Pump ’N’ Volume  Mascara by Dior, £27.

For a pop of colour on the eyes, the Rose Gold Palette by Huda Beauty, £56, has a good array of warm pinks, oranges and reds. Apply with a dampened make-up brush to intensify the eyeshadow, and use a little iridescent lip gloss to catch the light and make lips appear fuller. I love the Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in So Real, £26.

With any type of dressy make-up, whether you’re working a bold  lip or a dramatic  eye, always keep the skin as fresh  and dewy as possible. This stops your look from becoming too dated. I love using Dior’s Backstage Face & Body Foundation, £29, and the Amazing Concealer by Amazing Cosmetics, £16.50.
