Why orange-red lipstick trumped classic red at last night's SAG Awards - and the best shades for every budget

There was one particular lip colour that stole the show at this year's Screen Actors Guild Awards and it wasn't the classic red. From Chrissy Teigen to Michelle Dockery and Sophie Turner, an array of celebrities opted for punchy orange-red lipstick. While the majority opted for longer-lasting matte formulas, there was plenty of variety in terms of the shade and boldness.

Make-up artist Rachel Goodwin, who counts January Jones and Emma Stone as regulars, opted for a semi-matte orange-red hue for Michelle Dockery and a softer coral shade for Brie Larson to work with their dresses. While make-up artist Mary Phillips, who created Chrissy Teigen's bold lip for the awards ceremony, took to Instagram to stress the importance of great skin when you're wearing such a strong lip. Phillips employed La Mer skin products with the luxury beauty brand's latest foundation to ensure Teigen had a healthy glow.

When I asked Bobbi Brown's pro make-up artist Hannah Martin why she thought celebrities had stepped away from the classic red shade we so often associate with awards season, she said: "If you want to wear red but in a way that is modern and youthful then chose one that punches with a little orange." It's a surprisingly versatile hue and suits all skin tones from dark to porcelain. "Just ensure there is no high colour or redness around the nose and mouth before applying and chose a more peachy based blush so your lips and cheeks complement each other," adds Martin. With this in mind, here are the lipsticks to create the look...

Nars Lipstick in Heatwave, £21

Make-up artist Rachel Goodwin used this shade on Michelle Dockery for this year's SAG Awards. "Michelle wanted to make a statement with colour, so I focused on the incredible Ellie Saab dress she was wearing for inspiration - it is so colouful and electric," explained Goodwin. "I wanted her make-up to feel sophisticated and elegant with an emphasis on her natural features, she has great brows and cheekbones so the only pop of colour is on the lips."
