Granted, it's not the sexiest of subjects, but even the humble, understated razor has caused some seriously contentious conversations in recent years. To shave or not to shave, is the question at the centre of it all, as is the only reasonable answer: the choice to celebrate or remove your body hair is yours alone.

Furthering the conversation are a flurry of new-gen razors and brands that have sought to transform the outdated narratives surrounding body hair. Take new kid on the block Estrid, a vegan razor brand (yes, it's a thing) that has managed to make shaving look chic, with help no doubt from its campaigns, particularly apparent on Instagram, which inclusively showcase body and hair positivity, while celebrating the plurality of choice.

So, whether you're smoothing out your bikini line, or growing out your underarm hair - a la Julia Roberts at the premiere of Notting Hill - Estrid is here for it all.

Should you fall into the former catergory, like Rihanna, whose #SelfCareSunday rituals consist of wine, Fenty Skin and a £7.99 Gillette razor (more on this later), there are a few things to note in order to get the most out of your next shave.

"To get the smoothest shaving experience one should shower with warm water before starting off. When the skin is warm, the hair follicles open up, and the result becomes closer than ever," says co-founder of Estrid, Amanda Westerbom. "The lubricating vegan strip of the Estrid razor is enough to receive a close and smooth shave. However, when you want that extra luxurious shave you could add a shaving cream or top off with a body oil to stay smooth the whole day."

Knowing which direction to shave in is also key. "Where the skin is more sensitive, the bikini line for instance, one should shave in the direction of hair growth. Your skin will thank you for this! The hairs on the legs are not as thick and the skin is not as sensitive, so this area can handle some shaving in different directions."

Amanda's pro tip is to shave from different angles when removing underarm hair, since the hair grows in different directions and could be tricky to get rid of. Post-shave, apply a good body lotion to soothe the skin and avoid using a lotion that contains alcohol which could cause irritation.

If you're looking to upgrade your shaving routine, these are the tools to look out for...

Estrid Starter Kit, £7.95

Gluten-free and vegan, meaning from the lubricating strips in the razor head to all their body care products, Estrid's offerings are free of animal derived ingredients and provide a smooth, guilt-free shave.

Gillette Venus Comfortglide Spa Breeze Women's Razor, £7.99

Yes, we want to know every detail of Rihanna's beauty routine, right down to how she keeps on top of hair removal. This razor from Gillette was the unexpected hero of the singer's recent #SelfCareSunday Instagram post, but it's by no means a total surprise thanks to its built-in moisture gel bars which offer a controllable, fool-proof shave.

FFS Premium Razor Set, £9.95

For those after a more luxury experience without the price tag, this razor comes with the label of an award-winning design, a built-in bikini styling blade for hard to reach areas and lubricating aloe vera strips.
