Inspired by the Olympics? Here's how to prevent post-workout muscle ache

How to prevent post-workout muscle ache - the relaxing way

One of the things about exercise I love, somewhat inevitably for a beauty editor, is slatherering my skin with products afterwards. Actually, scratch that – it is my favourite thing about exercise. Plus, the promise  of a long, muscle-relaxing soak in the bath to soothe my achy muscles after a run is enough to make me work harder, pushing myself for an extra 10 minutes. And the tub really is the best place for easing tired hamstrings, tense shoulders or sore feet.

The product I seem to turn to time and time again is Mio Liquid Yoga Restorative Bath Soak. True to its spot-on name, which alludes to the stretch-inducing powers of the product, this combination of Epsom salts, arnica, spearmint and murumuru butter works wonders. Give the bottle  a shake (as the salts tend to settle at the bottom) and pour a couple of capfuls into the bath. Twenty minutes is all it takes  to notice a real difference: I use this after any intense sessions and can count on no achiness the next day. Genius. The only thing I’d change is how much you get in the bottle; I like to use quite a bit at a time, which means that, overall, the soak doesn’t last as long as I’d like it to.

Another to note is BetterYou Magnesium Flakes. Available in a kilogram sachet from Space NK for just £10, it’s truly great value. The magnesium flakes don’t have  a scent – nor do they foam or leave skin silky – but, trust me, they really do help to soothe tired muscles and curb the typical day-after aches and pains.

And for when I step out of the bath,  I adore Aromatherapy Associates De-Stress Muscle Gel. It leaves skin feeling cool and fresh – and gives the sensation that it’s doing something productive. Exactly want you want after a tiring workout.
